Month-on-month: August 2026

What the two rates mean

The yearly figure compares the same month a year apart. The monthly figure compares adjacent months. Neither is a forecast for the next twelve months. A lower inflation rate can still mean prices are rising, only more slowly.

For a realized investment result, compare after-fee and after-deduction return with price-index changes over matching dates. Applying the latest annual CPI to a multi-year investment return is an illustration under a constant-inflation assumption, not a measurement of what happened during those years.

Use the real-return calculator for explicit assumptions, or read the inflation and real-return guide. For other current indicators, open the daily brief.

Methodology, revisions and limitations

Observations come from digitally extractable PBS monthly CPI releases. Each national headline is checked against the General index row and its previous-period index. Urban, rural, monthly and fiscal-period averages are not substituted for national year-on-year inflation.

We retain the source document reference and acceptance time for each revision. Repeated downloads do not create new observations. If a document cannot be reconciled, it is not added. The last verified observation remains visible with its reporting period, while older accepted revisions remain in the audit history.
