The short answer
Roshan Digital Account is an account channel for eligible non-resident Pakistanis, not a single investment. Compare each available route by currency, maturity, liquidity, loss potential, deductions, early exit, and repatriation. Verify current offerings and terms with SBP and the participating bank on the date of the decision.
Use the Pakistan real-return calculator for transparent nominal, inflation, fee, and deduction scenarios. It is an illustration and does not forecast rates or currency movement.
| Route | Primary check | Currency question | Main failure scenario | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Bank deposit | Current term, rate basis and withdrawal rules | Is the deposit held in PKR or foreign currency? | Old promotional terms are treated as current | | Naya Pakistan Certificate | Currency, tenure, payout, encashment and deductions | Does the certificate match the goal currency? | Early exit or conversion changes the outcome | | PSX access | Broker, custody, settlement and company research | How will PKR sale proceeds translate at exit? | Equity volatility is treated like a deposit | | Other available product | Official eligibility and product documents | Which balance funds the purchase? | Bank marketing replaces source verification |
Treat RDA as an account channel
A Roshan Digital Account can connect an eligible non-resident Pakistani to banking and investment choices. The account itself is not one investment. Deposits, Naya Pakistan Certificates, PSX access and other current offerings have different currencies, terms, risks and exit procedures.
Use the State Bank of Pakistan’s current RDA and Naya Pakistan Certificate pages, then verify implementation with the participating bank. Product lists, currencies, rates and provider processes can change. Date every source and avoid copying promotional rates into an evergreen plan.
Begin with the liability currency and date. A PKR product may fit future spending in Pakistan. A foreign-currency goal requires translation and exchange-rate analysis even when the displayed PKR rate is higher.
Confirm eligibility and onboarding
Check current residency, identity and documentation requirements through official sources. Banks can have different digital workflows within the common framework. Record supported documents, verification steps, account currencies, expected processing and support channels.
Apply through the bank’s official domain or application. Do not pay an intermediary to arrange approval. Protect one-time passwords and do not allow remote screen control. Confirm the legal name of any account receiving funds.
Keep copies of the application, approval, account details and correspondence. Test login and account recovery before sending a large amount.
Document funding and repatriation
Record which foreign currencies can fund the account, the conversion rate or spread, transfer fee, value date and proof supplied by the sending institution. Confirm whether a product is purchased from foreign-currency or PKR balances.
Map the return route before investing: maturity or sale, settlement into RDA, conversion if required, beneficiary setup and outward transfer. Check whether principal and profit are repatriable under the current rules and what documentation the bank needs.
A small test can expose name mismatches, transfer delays or support problems. Keep inward-remittance and investment records for the eventual outward transaction.
Evaluate Naya Pakistan Certificates
Naya Pakistan Certificates have defined currencies, tenures and terms published through official channels. Confirm the current issue details, return basis, payout, maturity, early encashment, tax treatment and availability through the selected bank. Do not treat an old rate table as current.
Currency choice changes the risk. A PKR certificate can offer a different nominal rate while exposing the investor to USD/PKR or another goal-currency movement. A foreign-currency certificate reduces that specific translation but still has term, reinvestment and sovereign considerations.
Run maturity and early-exit cash flows after fees and applicable deductions. Match the tenure to the date the money is needed.
Evaluate deposits
An RDA bank balance or term deposit follows the participating bank’s terms. Confirm whether profit is fixed or variable, balance requirements, payout, early withdrawal, transfer limits and account charges. Check how the Deposit Protection Corporation framework applies to the exact deposit and amount.
Bank deposits should not be assumed to have the same terms as Naya Pakistan Certificates. Record provider credit exposure and the portion within any applicable protection limit.
Operational service matters for a non-resident customer. Test statements, support, beneficiary management and recovery from a lost phone or expired document.
Evaluate PSX access
RDA-related PSX access provides market exposure, not a guaranteed income product. Verify the broker and account chain through official PSX and bank materials. Read charges, custody, settlement, withdrawal and complaint procedures.
Use issuer disclosures for research. Diversify company and sector risk. A familiar brand or low price per share does not establish value. The PSX beginner guide provides a complete research checklist.
Public Sahulat profiles intentionally omit exchange quote-feed fields until written data rights support public display. Execution decisions should use authorized broker and exchange channels.
Compare all choices on one sheet
Create columns for provider, product, funding currency, return currency, term, payout, early exit, fees, applicable tax, settlement, repatriation and material risks. Add source URL and checked date. Convert expected cash to the goal currency under several exchange-rate cases.
Suppose an illustrative PKR certificate yields 14 percent before deductions while a foreign-currency certificate yields 7 percent. If PKR weakens 10 percent against the goal currency, the translated difference narrows substantially. The result is multiplicative and depends on exact dates, costs and terms. These are examples, not current rates.
Do not choose from the largest displayed percentage. Choose from the net goal-currency cash available on the required date.
Model early exit and reinvestment
Life abroad can change quickly. Run a case where funds are needed before maturity. Use the written encashment rule, processing time and exchange-rate spread. Record any loss of profit or charge.
At maturity, the next available rate may differ. Do not project one certificate rate across repeated terms without a reinvestment assumption. A maturity ladder can reduce the amount repriced on one date.
Keep near-term emergency money separate so the investment is not the only source for an urgent foreign-currency expense.
Account for tax and reporting
Use current official Pakistan material and provider certificates for local deductions. The residence country may impose separate reporting or tax on income and gains. RDA convenience does not replace cross-border tax analysis.
Keep statements, conversion rates, transfer receipts and tax certificates. Seek qualified advice covering both jurisdictions. Do not infer treatment from another RDA holder whose residence, status or product differs.
Record Zakat deductions separately and seek personal religious guidance where needed.
Check bank execution quality
Compare onboarding time, transfer status visibility, statements, support response, dispute handling, security controls and account recovery. A product can have attractive written terms while poor execution creates missed dates or inaccessible funds.
Use a registered email and phone that will remain under the investor’s control. Update expiring documents early. Confirm what happens after a change in residency or contact information.
Keep complaint reference numbers and escalate through official channels. Do not send credentials through informal messaging.
Avoid concentrated remittance decisions
An RDA makes Pakistan investment easier, but ease should not determine portfolio weight. Count existing Pakistan property, business, family obligations and investments. Set a country and currency range consistent with the household’s goals.
Diversify institutions where appropriate and understand protection limits. Diversify asset risks rather than opening several accounts that all hold the same exposure.
Review weights after large exchange-rate or market moves. New contributions can rebalance without forcing a sale.
Maintain the RDA file
Save official product documents, rate notices, account terms, transfer instructions, statements, tax records, nominations and support contacts. Record each source-check date. Review before every new maturity rather than assuming the original terms continue.
The overseas investment guide covers country allocation and operational resilience. The National Savings and bank comparison shows how to normalize cash flows, and the real-return guide explains currency and inflation calculations.
The final decision record should show how money enters, what it owns, how it can lose, when it exits and how much reaches the goal currency. If one step is uncertain, resolve it with the bank or official source before funding.
Worked channel comparison
An illustrative investor has USD 20,000 and a goal in dollars after three years. The comparison includes a USD certificate, a PKR certificate and diversified PSX exposure. For each route, the sheet records conversion, product return, fees, applicable deductions, early exit, settlement and outward transfer.
The PKR certificate case must include several future USD/PKR rates. The PSX case must include dividends, market loss cases and broker costs. The USD certificate case must include its lower-return and early-exit scenarios. None should use a current promotional rate unless the source and effective date are stored.
The result is a range of dollars available on the goal date, not a ranking of displayed percentages. These amounts are illustrative and do not recommend any route.
Create a provider test log
Before full funding, record onboarding time, support response, a small inward transfer, statement availability and, where feasible, a small outward transfer. Note beneficiary setup, cut-off times and every fee. Resolve name or document mismatches.
Repeat critical checks after changing phone, email, passport or country of residence. Keep official case numbers. Operational evidence belongs beside the investment calculation because an inaccessible account cannot meet the goal on time.
Set maturity reminders
Create reminders ninety and thirty days before every maturity. Confirm current renewal options, tax documents, goal currency and transfer instructions. Do not allow an automatic rollover to replace a fresh decision. Preserve the expired terms with the final cash-flow record.
Compare banks without relying on rate alone
Participating banks can differ in onboarding, supported features, transfer execution, support and account recovery. Use the same small test and checklist for each candidate. Record the date and evidence rather than relying on an expatriate forum report that may describe another bank or an older process.
Check account charges, conversion spreads and beneficiary controls. Ask how an unresolved transfer is traced and what identification is needed after a document expires. For a family relying on future access, nomination and succession operations deserve the same attention as the displayed return.
Stop conditions
Pause funding if the bank cannot explain the product in writing, transfer instructions conflict, the destination account is not verified, eligibility is uncertain or the investment terms are stale. Pause renewal if the goal currency, residency or tax facts changed. A short delay while resolving evidence is cheaper than discovering after maturity that the route cannot meet the intended payment.
